Prosecutors are deciding whether to seek the death penalty against an Alton man accused of killing his parents and grandmother.

Gaurav Chopra pleaded not guilty to all charges on Monday, Sept. 21. He was indicted on Sept. 8 on charges of capital murder of multiple persons, attempted capital murder of multiple persons, and evading arrest in connection with the deaths.

A judge asked prosecutors if they intend to seek the death penalty. Prosecutors requested a status hearing where they will announce whether they will seek the death penalty for Chopra.

As previously reported, on June 16, the Alton Police Department responded to the 3700 block of Roosevelt Avenue following a 911 call from a man reporting that his brother, identified as Chopra, had shot and killed their family members and fled the scene.

A motive for the killings has not been disclosed yet.

The status hearing is scheduled for Oct. 19 at 9 a.m.
