WESLACO – The aftermath of a heated commissioners meeting still being felt in the city of Mercedes.

Four people were arrested at the meeting back in September and now on Wednesday, a fifth.

On Tuesday night, Israel Coronado was arrested for the actions he allegedly committed back at the September city meeting.

His attorney, family and some Mercedes residents are once again left with a lot of questions about the city’s actions.

Coronado is charged with disrupting a meeting or procession which is a Class B misdemeanor.

His attorney, Tania Ramirez, says the police department has not been communicating with her at all since the arrest. She was unable to see her client until the arraignment and only knew of his charge itself, not what led up to it.

Ramirez also wants to know why Coronado was arraigned by the justice of the peace and not their city judge.

All of this happened just days after Coronado announced he’s running for Mercedes mayor.
