Federal immigration officer shoots, injures man in Austin, report says
A federal immigration official shot and injured a man in Austin on Sunday afternoon, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
It’s not immediately clear what led up to the shooting, which reportedly took place in the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane near U.S. 183 and Research Boulevard.
The man was subsequently transported to a hospital, the Statesman reported. His identity and condition are currently unknown.
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the Austin Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety didn’t immediately respond to comment requests.
Democratic Congressman Greg Casar called for the shooting to be investigated.
"The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning," he wrote on a social media post. "As the facts emerge, I am demanding a full, independent investigation, immediate release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law."
He continued, "Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability."
This summer, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer also fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston on July 7. Investigations into that killing are ongoing.
