The San Perlita Independent School District reopened on Thursday after closing for two days over what the district referred to as a "rapid spread" of COVID-19 cases.

The district said campuses were cleaned and disinfected before classes resumed.

About 30 miles away in Harlingen, parent Brenda Acevedo said the closure prompted her to take extra precautions for her two children, who attend Lamar Elementary.

Acevedo said all members of her family of four are vaccinated, and none of them have had COVID-19.

Dr. Raul Reyes, a family care physician with Valley Baptist Health System, said he has recently seen more COVID-19 patients, including children.

"In the [past few] weeks, I've seen numbers in the tens or 20s of patients that are having COVID, which is something that I had never seen before," Reyes said.

Dr. Reyes said summer travel and the return to school help drive the increase.

Cameron and Hidalgo counties no longer provide active case numbers, but Hidalgo County health officials said they see a rise in cases around this time of year.

Dr. Reyes said COVID-19 symptoms look like any other respiratory illness.

"The symptoms are actually very typical of upper respiratory symptoms with other conditions like flu or bronchitis," Reyes said.

Dr. Reyes said he has not had any children tell him they are experiencing a loss of taste, which he described as one of the main symptoms of COVID-19.

Dr. Reyes recommends that children with any symptoms be tested by their primary care doctor before going to school. He also recommends vaccination and wearing a mask when sick to help prevent the virus from spreading.
