A local nonprofit is hosting its first legal workshop for families of children with disabilities.

The free session is set for Saturday, Sept. 5 at Brownsville's main library.

The workshop will cover decision-making agreements, power of attorney, guardianship, and special needs trusts, according to the nonprofit group Down by the Border.

"We get many calls at the beginning of the school session regarding documents that are needed when an adult child with a disability turns 18," Down by the Border President Dolores Zarate said. "The school district requires certain documents that a parent has prepared and has made available to them to the school districts."

Down by the Border says 100 people have already signed up, and 20 spots remain.

The workshop will also have people available to help Spanish-speaking families. Click here to register.
