The freezing temperatures left some Valley citrus farmers with little to do to help save their crops.

Harlingen Citrus Grower Dale Merden says the cold weather caused ice build up inside the citrus fruit. 

The freeze arrived after the first harvest of oranges but the second harvest is significantly damaged.

He says the grapefruits in his field are also ready to harvest but Merden says the freeze will cause the fruit to rot and drop off the branch.

The citrus is expected to fall off faster than it can be used.

"Anytime you get down to 21 degrees for several hours... you're going to have some damage to the crop.”

Now, farmers are left wondering whether the trees and branches will survive. Merden says if the freeze keeps up, the trees could die too. He's hoping the weather warms up before the damage is done.
