WESLACO – Hidalgo County is changing the flood standards for new subdivisions in order to improve the drainage.

On Tuesday, commissioners and the county approved new rules.

Before the meeting, subdivisions were required to be prepared for a 25-year flood; now the standard was increased to a 50-year flood.

KRGV’s Christian von Preysing spoke with Drainage District General Manager Raul Cesin and County Planning Director T.J. Arredondo about the changes.

The new plan requires new subdivisions to have a bigger place for their water.

Cesin and Arredondo explain this will increase how much water a subdivision must hold in the event of a flood.
