One of the oldest homes still standing in Brownsville has a new location at Linear Park.

The Neale House completed a 2-mile journey to its new home on Tuesday, drawing a small crowd to watch the move.

The home belonged to William Neale, an Englishman who built it after coming to the Rio Grande Valley in 1830. He served as a captain and second lieutenant in the Civil War and later became the mayor of Brownsville in the 1850s.

Channel 5 News reported in March that the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley requested Brownsville relocate the home. The ceiling of the front porch had fallen apart, and the front porch collapsed into piles of rotting wood.

"The deterioration that has happened over the years, there is some concern, but that's why we made sure that when we hired the contractor that is moving it was someone, an expert, moving these types of homes," Yolanda De La Torre, Brownsville’s director of enterprise project management office, said.

Contractors removed the roof and wrapped the home in a tarp for the move. They then carefully moved the home from Neale Drive near the university to Linear Park.

The city now needs to inspect the home to see if it suffered any damage during the move.

"Whoever the potential contractor is to restore it, they would need to go inside the house with appropriate hard hats and work boots and be accompanied by someone who is familiar with the house," De La Torre said.

The Neale House will sit next to the Laureles Ranch House Museum in Linear Park. Brownsville plans to restore it and turn it into a place where people can learn the history of the city.

Brownsville plans to start the design phase of the renovation in the coming months, with a goal of completing renovations by 2028.
