LIST: Rio Grande Valley cities hand out sandbags ahead of weekend rain
Rio Grande Valley, TX (KRGV) — Cities across the Rio Grande Valley are distributing sandbags ahead of expected rainy weather.
The first round of rain is expected to arrive in the Valley on Saturday morning before taking an afternoon break and starting again in the evening.
More rain is expected on Sunday throughout the day, with most activity in the late afternoon and into the evening.
Several cities are offering sandbags to residents.
Hidalgo County
The city of Alamo is offering sandbag distribution for residents who may need them as a precaution. Residents can stop by city hall at 420 North Tower Rd. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pick up empty sandbags. Residents who are 60 years or older or have a disability can receive a voucher for assistance.
Proof of residency and a shovel are required for those filling their own sandbags. Bags can be filled at Alamo Sports Complex at 600 East Ridge Rd., Balli Park at 804 East Nebraska Rd. and the intersection of Duranta Dr. and Professional Rd.
Residents with a voucher can receive assistance at the public works department at 803 South Tower Rd. from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The limit is five bags per household and two bags per business door.
The city of Donna will be offering sandbags on Sept. 30, 2026 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Oct. 1, 2026 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sandbags can be picked up at the public works department at 1304 Silver Ave. Proof of residency and business ownership is required. The limit is four sandbags per household and six sandbags per business.
The city of Edinburg will be holding a drive-thru sandbag distribution event for residents, while supplies last.
Sandbags will be available on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting, at the Edinburg Service Center, located at 1201 North Doolittle Road.
City staff will load sandbags in vehicles upon arrival. When all pre-filled bags are distributed, the location will become a self-service site. Bags and shovels will be provided. Proof of residency must be provided.
Each household may receive up to six sandbags, and each business may receive up to eight sandbags.
The City of Hidalgo will be offering sandbags to residents on Sept. 30, 2026 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Sandbags can be picked up at the Payne Arena at 2600 North 10th St. It is a self-serve distribution event. Residents needing special assistance can call 956-843-2286.
The city of Mission is distributing sandbags on Wednesday, Sept. 30, until 6 p.m. Distribution will continue Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting.
Residents can go to West 15th Street and Perkins Avenue, next to the Recycling Center, to pick up the sandbags.
The city of Weslaco is hosting a self-serve sandbag distribution station on Sept. 30, 2026 until 8 p.m.
Residents can stop by the lobby in city hall at 255 South Kansas Ave. to request sandbags. Proof of residency is required. The limit is six sandbags per household and 12 sandbags per business.
Starr County
The city of La Grulla is handing out sandbags at the La Grulla Volunteer Fire Department at 268 FM 2360. Residents must bring their own shovels and limits are three bags per door.
The city of Penitas will be handing out sandbags on Wednesday, Sept. 30 while supplies last. Residents can stop by the Penitas Fire Department on the corner of Main Street and Military Road. Limit is four bags per household.
The city of Rio Grande City are distributing sandbags until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. Residents can pickup sandbags at 632 West Eisenhower Road and proof of residency is required. Limits are five bags per household.
Sand and bags will be available for residents to fill.
Starr County Precinct 4 will be handing out sandbags to precinct 4 residents. Bags can be picked up at the Starr County Precinct 4 yard at 2235 North FM 755, the old Medina Electric Building.
A valid ID is required as proof of residency and the limit is four sandbags per household while supplies last.
