LOS FRESNOS – Los Fresnos is now home to the largest fire station in the Rio Grande Valley.

The 33,000 square foot facility is located near Highway 100 next to the Los Fresnos rodeo grounds.

The Los Fresnos fire chief, Gene Daniels, says the $1.7 million complex has 2,500 square feet of training space.

He explains it’s big enough to house five fire trucks, three ambulances and two first responder trucks and still leaves additional space for equipment they may need to purchase in the future.

Unlike the old station, it will have 10,000 square feet for living quarters.

"The fire department had no living quarters, nowhere for firefighters to sleep in the event of a hurricane or something big. If we wanted personnel at the station, we had nowhere to put them," Daniels explains.

KRGV’s Daisy Martinez spoke with a resident who says she’s happy about the new facility.
