Roma is repaving one of its busiest roads near the port of entry.

Mendez Avenue is the main route for 18-wheelers and heavy cargo trucks crossing through the Roma port of entry. The current asphalt is breaking down under the weight of that traffic.

The city is putting in $150,000, and using a grant worth nearly $500,000 to repave it.

"We've seen the number of trucks increase. It's increased, I believe, by 600%," Congressman Henry Cuellar said. "And the more trucks you have, that means the more jobs, the more trade, more economic activity."

Repaving is set to start within three months. The project is expected to take six to eight months to complete.
