Mission is planning to build a new water plant on the city's south side to support ongoing population and commercial growth.

The city wants to build the plant near Military Highway, between Inspiration Road and Conway Avenue.

The project is still in its early stages. The city is working on the environmental process and testing wells in the area.

Part of that testing will help determine how the facility sources its supply.

"We're planning to construct a 6 MGD (million gallons per day) water plant. But half of it, we want to pull it from the ground. So we want to make sure that the water is good," Mission Co-Interim City Manager Juan Pablo Terrazas said.

Mission's new budget includes $2 million for the new water plant.

No construction start date has been announced yet.
