A $34,000 grant will be used to buy new kitchen and cafeteria equipment at La Villa ISD.

The new equipment will go toward bringing more food options to students, the district said.

This coming school year, La Villa ISD students will now have up to four breakfast and lunch items to choose from, compared to one option last year.

The district hopes to get the new equipment by October.

“That will give us the opportunity to purchase the equipment that we need to improve these programs, which in turn will allow us to focus the money that we have to purchase better food items — different variety of items for the students.” La Villa ISD Child Nutrition Director Eric Batarse said.

Batarse said the food choices will follow nutritional guidelines while also providing students with the meals they may not get at home.

Students will be able to give their input on food choices at their Back-To-School Bash set for Monday, Aug. 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the La Villa Middle School Gym.
