Residents in Rio Grande City are raising concerns about stray dogs roaming near their homes, and the city's animal control department is now setting up traps to capture them.

Channel 5 News spoke with people on Hermosa Street, where neighbors say stray dogs are a constant presence.

Chriselda Marquez, a Rio Grande City resident, said the dogs are more than just a nuisance. One of her family's pets, a dog named Buddy, was attacked by stray dogs and died after 18 years with the family. She said stray dogs have also damaged her parents' home while chasing other animals.

"It's a very sad situation; we didn't expect him to get attacked, and he died," Marquez said.

The Rio Grande City Animal Control Department is now using new software to track where stray animals are being reported across the city.

"We have new software that we have now that plots out the whole town, and as the calls are coming in, we plot out the areas where the main problem is," Rio Grande City Animal Control Director Eli Gonzalez said.

His teams set up traps on El Paseo Drive, Gomez Street, and Hermosa Street after receiving multiple complaints from those areas.

"We had multiple calls from those three particular streets; they were having issues with abandoned dogs, so we decided to place traps on all three streets," Gonzalez said.

Since setting up the traps last week, animal control has captured four dogs on Gomez Street.

Marquez said fewer stray dogs make the area safer to live in.

"It makes me feel safer knowing that it has worked in the past. The dogs do get trapped in the traps, so I am hoping this will alleviate the problem by getting rid of all the dogs," Marquez said.

Animal control will take captured dogs to their shelter if they are adoptable.
