Several Rio Grande Valley cities are teaming up to fix water problems and find funding to pay for the repairs.

The group, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) San Antonio, held its first workshop in Brownsville on Tuesday, bringing together local mayors, city council members, and engineering firms.

The cities are looking to address broken pipes, low water pressure, and contamination risks.

San Benito Commissioner Daniel Cortez said the group is still in the planning stages.

"This is the planning stage where we formed the PUA. We're having meetings, and we're going to just try to structure our needs in priority and see what we're going to try to tackle first," Cortez said.

Cortez said applying for funding as a region could bring in more money than going it alone.

“If we apply for a grant by ourselves, we'll qualify for a smaller amount. We do it regionally; we'll get larger amounts of money, and that will help us fix some of these issues," Cortez said.

The group is also looking at shared projects, like a water plant that several cities could use together.

Officials say funding is the biggest hurdle, especially for smaller cities that can't cover these projects on their own.
