Harlingen, TX (KRGV) — A social media threat against a Harlingen middle school has been investigated and determined not to be credible, according to the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District.

The threat targeted Coakley Middle School and began circulating on social media. The district said it immediately worked with local law enforcement to look into the information.

Law enforcement determined the threat was not credible. Families and staff at Coakley Middle School were notified.

As a precaution, law enforcement will have an increased presence at the school Monday, Sept. 28.

HCISD reminded the community that school threats are taken seriously even if they are meant as a joke or turn out to be false. Under Texas law, certain false reports or threats involving a public school may be considered a felony and can lead to criminal charges and school disciplinary action.

The district encouraged students, families, staff and community members to report concerning information to a trusted adult, school administrator or law enforcement instead of sharing it on social media.
