A folklórico dance group from South Texas College is heading to AT&T Stadium to perform at a Dallas Cowboys game for the first time in the program's history.

Thirty-two dancers from the Ballet Folklórico South Texas College will take the stage on Saturday, Sept. 19. The group has been practicing twice a week from 7 to 10 p.m. to get ready.

"This invitation was three years in the making, and every year it's like we were super close in getting invited," Ballet Folklórico South Texas College Director Victor Gomez said.

Gomez said the Cowboys' organizing committee first found the group through photos and videos of their performances.

The dancers will perform two distinct styles. One is Sonora Bronco, a style rooted in the South Texas and northern Mexico border region, featuring western clothing and accordion-based music.

The other is an Aztec dance, complete with handmade costumes and elaborate feathered headpieces.

"A lot of elaborate feathers that are native to Mexico, pre-Columbian times. A lot of pheasant feathers, turkey feathers. So if you could picture what they call a penacho, which is a headpiece and then having feathers [that are] up to eight feet tall," Gomez said.

The dancers will also perform for FC Dallas at the stadium on Saturday. South Texas College is providing transportation and housing for the trip.

For dancer Andrea Arechiga, who has been with the team for seven years, the performance carries a deeper meaning.

"It's very special. We're grateful for it because we like learning new styles, new dances and always it's to keep our traditions going especially here in the Valley," Arechiga said.

Fellow dancer Giandel Rios, who has been with the group for 2 years, said the trip is a chance to share something meaningful with a wider audience.

"I think it's such a beautiful way. It's such a beautiful art form. It's such a beautiful creativity. I think it can just showcase so much about Mexico's beauty," Rios said.

STC’s Ballet Folklorico will perform on Sept. 19 at the FC Dallas game and Sept. 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
