Port Isabel, TX (KRGV) — LabPadre says it needs more tests before deciding whether SpaceX launches are damaging homes in Port Isabel and South Padre Island.

Balderma Alaniz has lived in his house for more than 50 years. He lives less than 10 miles from the SpaceX Boca Chica launch site and says he has concerns.

"And you can see the cracks, right there and you can see the broken pipe inside the house," Alaniz said.

He is questioning whether SpaceX launches could be playing a role in the damage at his home.

"But the damage done is tremendous. Now they want to launch 100 times a year? No," Alaniz said.

LabPadre conducted their own test during a recent SpaceX launch from Boca Chica Beach. The group placed a windowpane 75 miles from the launch site to document the effect of the launch.

Anthony Gomez with LabPadre says the test result showed the effect was minimal.

"There's a bit of vibration from it but, again, the most important thing is the pressure wave coming from these locations. It's still less than 10 pounds, it would take several hundreds of pounds for it to affect anything. It wasn't able to shatter plain glass," Gomez said.

Gomez says other causes could explain the damage.

"It has nothing to do with the launches itself, it's a very harsh environment. It's a hurricane zone, there's constantly ground shifting due to the fact that we're on a flood plan, it's a high coastal area, there's a lot of salt. It's normal for things to deteriorate over time." Gomez said.

LabPadre says it will conduct more tests during the next SpaceX launch and share the results with the public.
