Harlingen, TX (KRGV) — Cameron County crews are spraying for mosquitoes after the county health department said it answered more than 100 calls this week about the pests.

“These [recent] rains woke up the mosquitos, and they're coming out, and we're getting plenty of calls,” Carlos Chapa, Cameron County’s assistant environmental health director, said.

Crews started spraying areas across the county to try and kill off adult mosquitoes. Work continues Tuesday night in areas around Cameron Park, north of Bayview, areas around Rio Hondo, Green Valley Farms east of San Benito, and areas between La Feria and Santa Maria.

Santiago Hernandez, a Harlingen resident, said the mosquitoes have interrupted his daily morning walks.

“You step one foot out the door and they'll eat you up,” Hernandez said.

A city spokesperson told Channel 5 News that Harlingen's second round of spraying starts Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, at 7:30 p.m.

City officials have also been using larvicide in standing water.

Hernandez said he is hoping to get back to his morning walks soon.
