MERCEDES – Some student athletes at a Rio Grande Valley "magnet" district have a decision to make on how to pursue their athletic or academic dreams.

This comes after the UIL says South Texas Independent School District is breaking the rules.

A letter from South Texas ISD went out to the families of student athletes saying the UIL placed strict limitations for the district preventing high schools from competing against each other or any teams outside the district.

The UIL told CHANNEL 5 NEWS in a statement:

"South Texas ISD began offering organized athletic activities against other schools, raising eligibility questions for their students."

The UIL gave them two options: to continue to offer organized athletic competition against other schools, making their students ineligible to participate in UIL activities or ceasing those programs, allowing their students to continue competing for their home districts.
