Edcouch, TX (KRGV) — A local farmer says months of extreme drought have left his fields too dry to work, but rain in the forecast could change that.

Brian Jones has farmed in Edcouch for 40 years, growing corn, cotton and soybeans. The area is in an extreme drought and the ground has gotten so hard that it's affecting his equipment.

"We can't get our tillage equipment to go into the ground," Jones said. "The ground is so hard and dry that it won't penetrate or if we finally get into the ground it's tearing up the equipment."

Jones said the farm hasn't had any moisture since Father's Day.

"We went through the whole month of September with no rain and that is kind of rare for Rio Grande Valley to go through August and September with no rain," Jones said.

He's hoping for several inches of rain spread over multiple days.

"It's not only just a few inches, but it's a few inches over several days too and that will really benefit us because it allow that rain to really soak into the ground," Jones said.

Experts say the rain can help, but too much too fast can make things worse. Danielle Sekula, integrated pest management specialist for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, said slow and steady rain is the goal.

"Probably anything above five inches just because if it comes in fast and hard we get a lot of runoff and we like it to be slow and consistent so it be nice to get two or three inches of rain," Sekula said. "Any type of rain is good rain."

Sekula is also hoping the rain reaches Falcon Reservoir.

"I am hoping we get some rain over Falcon to fill up that reservoir because that will help as far as allotment for irrigation," Sekula said.

Jones said he had his tractors parked for about two weeks waiting for rain to arrive.
