Valley residents urged to check voter registration after software error leaves data incomplete
Cameron County, TX (KRGV) — Cameron County election workers are racing to process thousands of voter registration records that arrived late due to a software glitch.
A third-party vendor update in October 2025 caused three data fields to drop from daily files sent to the Texas Secretary of State. The Department of Public Safety caught the error in late August and fixed it Sept. 13, then resent all affected records to the state.
That meant thousands of records arrived at election offices across the Rio Grande Valley with the October 5 registration deadline just days away.
Channel 5 News emailed and called every county election department. Channel 5 News received data from Cameron, Starr and Hidalgo counties showing more than 14,000 records were sent across those three counties.
The problem only affected people who completed a driver license or ID transaction online and selected "yes" when asked about voter registration. People who completed that process during an in-person visit to the Department of Public Safety were not affected.
Workers like Anna Salgado are going through the records one by one, checking names and addresses to make sure everything is accurate.
"So what I would do in this case, I would give it to our supervisor so she can make sure and verify which is the correct address because it's very important to keep everything in record," Salgado said.
Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said the office brought in extra help to get through the backlog.
"We've actually brought in between eight and 12 people to help us," Garza said. "Some people only come on the weekends because we're working around the clock to get through this backlog."
Garza said the office has about six people working late into the evening to process the records.
Cameron County is prioritizing new applications and people who moved from another county. Until a transfer is processed, a person could still show up as registered in their old county.
If a name is not on the list at the polls, voters can still cast a provisional ballot.
"The other good news is that you can still vote a provisional ballot, meaning you'll be able to make your selections and it'll give us a chance to research to make sure that you did register timely," Garza said.
Garza said voters should not wait until they get to the polls to check. Voters can confirm their registration status online.
The Department of Public Safety said all potentially affected records have been identified and resent and new controls are in place to make sure complete information is sent and received.
