The Weslaco Fire Department is warning the public about the dangers of burning trash after a rise in fires destroying homes and surrounding areas.

A mobile home was recently destroyed after the Hidalgo County Fire Marshal said a neighbor was burning trash and the fire spread to the family's home. Only charred debris remains on the property.

Under the law, no one is allowed to burn trash within city limits. Anyone caught doing so can face a fine of up to $300.

Burning some household items is allowed within county lines, but only with a burn permit and when there is no drought or wind. A burn permit in Hidalgo County costs about $25 per year.

Anyone caught burning without a permit can face a fine of up to $500.
