The Weslaco Independent School District school board unanimously accepted Superintendent Dr. Richard Rivera's retirement on Monday.

Rivera will serve as superintendent through Dec. 31. He has been part of Weslaco ISD for 20 years.

"Back in 1996, I told the board that was hiring me at that time that I will not fumble the ball, and I did not. When I came back the second time, I told this board I will not fumble the ball, and I haven't. I don't intend to fumble the ball and I will give this job 100 percent of my time, between now and Dec. 31. And I'll leave with no regrets, many happy days, and I'm proud to have been your superintendent during these 20 years," Rivera said.

The school board discussed appointing an interim superintendent during the meeting, but no action was taken on the agenda item.
