The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi suspended a six-hour search for a missing kayaker off South Padre Island after covering 168 square nautical miles.

According to the Coast Guard, the search began after concerned beachgoers and lifeguards near Beach Access #6 called around 4:30 p.m. Saturday about a man in a kayak about 400 yards offshore before losing sight of him.

While the empty kayak remained visible, the paddler was nowhere to be seen, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard deployed two aircraft and a boat crew to search the area alongside Cameron County park rangers and beach patrol units.

After six hours, the Coast Guard and partner agencies suspended their search, pending further developments.

"Anytime we have a report of a PIW (person in the water), we surge as many assets to the scene as quickly as we can, and search for as long as we can reasonably hope to find the person. Whenever we suspend from actively searching we work in close coordination with our other government agency partners, as we did in this case," Coast Guard Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator CDR Jared Korn said in a statement.
