The Mission Police Department received state funding and will soon provide a bird's-eye view while monitoring public safety.

The funding is part of a $1.2 million grant the department received through Operation Lone Star.

A portion of the grant will put more officers on the ground, but Mission police are also using it to add new equipment, including two Skywatch towers.

The grant comes from the office Gov. Greg Abbott and targets border-related crime and public safety.

Mission police said the funding will pay for officer overtime, along with new police radios and equipment, with the SkyWatch towers providing an elevated vantage point for public monitoring.

"They need equipment, they need training, and, more importantly, support to be prepared for that," Mission Police Chief Cesar Torres said.

The grant requires no local match, meaning the city does not have to use local tax dollars to receive the funding.

Police said the funding will be used throughout the fiscal year 2027.
