Harlingen High School's only female football player inspires on and off the field

A Harlingen High School senior is making her mark as the only girl on the Cardinals football team.
Brie Posada started her football journey in middle school, first as a linebacker before finding her place as a kicker.
"I will say my journey has been a challenge. It's not easy being the only female in a male dominant sport," Posada said.
Harlingen High School Head Football Coach Manny Gomez said Posada's work ethic sets her apart.
"She understands what her job is, and to me that's what complete focus is. A lot of it goes to the testament to her support system, her parents, and, at the same time, her will," Gomez said.
Posada credits the people around her for helping her get this far.
"Without the support of my parents, my family, my friends, everybody who's supported me, I wouldn't have been able to do it without them," Posada said.
She said the obstacles she has faced have only made her stronger.
"I would say there's been challenges, but I've been able to overcome them," Posada said. "It really helps me become a better player, a better person, have a stronger mindset, and just do my best."
"Do not take yourself out because there are some people who don't want to see you succeed," Posada added. "Especially because either you're a girl or this is not your sport, so I use that to keep motivation and keep me humble as well."
Posada played on the JV team last year. This season, she is waiting for her shot on the varsity squad.
"I haven't been on the field yet. I'm hoping once we start getting more into the season I can make my way in there and the coaches can call me up and I'm going to be ready. Just to fulfill my goal of continuing this from middle school to now," Posada said.
She also has a message for young girls watching from the stands on Friday nights.
"Keep going, don't stop. You're going to have challenges because it's unorthodox; it's not very common to have a girl on a football team. And to be able to do that, it feels good because you know you've proved somebody wrong," Posada said.
Looking ahead, Posada said her biggest goal goes beyond the field.
"I really hope I open doors for other little girls. Maybe there will eventually be an all girl's football team; that's a goal in itself. It would be amazing," Posada said.
