Pharr, TX (KRGV) — Hidalgo County awarded $445,000 to The PossAble Dream Foundation to expand transportation and student support for adults finishing high school and preparing for work, according to a news release.

The county recognized the partnership during a Tuesday commissioners court meeting. The funding will pay for specialized student support staff and transportation vans for The PossAble Dream Adult High School.

The foundation said the help is meant to remove barriers that can keep adults from returning to school while they balance work and family responsibilities. The partnership will also help Hidalgo County residents prepare for higher-wage jobs after graduation, the release said.

“Our students come back to school because they want a better future for themselves and family,” PossAble Dream Foundation Board President Dr. Daniel P. King said in a statement. “Hidalgo County’s support will help us reach more adults who thought that opportunity had passed them by and help them finish what they started. When a parent earns a diploma and qualifies for a better-paying job, the impact reaches the whole family. That is how we begin to change the future of our communities."

The contribution will also fund staff who help residents return to school, complete job training and find employment, including adults involved with the justice system. The partnership supports Hidalgo County's Prosperity Task Force initiative, which connects public agencies with education and community partners to address poverty through access to education and employment.

The PossAble Dream Adult High School offers tuition-free, in-person education for adults ages 18 to 50 who have not completed high school. Students can earn a high school diploma while pursuing industry certifications to help them obtain a higher wage job.
