Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Brownsville is preparing a $1 million project to upgrade more than 30 intersections, according to the city.

The upgrades will focus on intersections along FM 802, Price Road and Boca Chica Boulevard. Officials says the work will help keep traffic moving and make it safer for people crossing the street.

Crews will install new detection equipment at the intersections.

"It's gonna improve traffic flow throughout the city, alleviate congestion, and provide safety for pedestrians as well," Brownsville City Engineer Carlos Lastra said.

The Texas Department of Transportation and the city will pay for the project. The city expects crews to start construction in three to four weeks and finish in six months.

The city says commutes will not be affected while crews work on the upgrades.
