A Combes police officer saved a 2-year-old boy's life last week after the child stopped breathing.

Patrol officer Brandon Echavarria was on patrol in Combes when a mother flagged him down for help.

"She frantically said her child was unresponsive," Echavarria said.

The mother told him she was trying to get her son to the hospital but stopped when she spotted his patrol unit.

"She was yelling and crying because her son was unresponsive. When she saw my patrol unit, she thought it was the best option at the time because she knew that we could get EMS out there quickly," Echavarria said.

Echavarria did not wait for an ambulance. He started CPR right away.

"What I asked the mother to do was to open the trunk of the SUV. I placed the baby on his back, and I started chest compressions up until I felt a small pulse," Echavarria said. "My immediate response was save a life. Not knowing the condition of the child, just knowing there was no response let me act fast and try to get a heartbeat back."

It worked. The boy survived.

Echavarria encouraged parents to learn CPR to be ready for any situation.

"Expect the unexpected sometimes. It's not the best circumstances you want to be in, but have a basic understanding of CPR and medical care," Echavarria said.

The 2-year-old boy was released from the hospital and is now back home.
