Donna High School football is making a fresh start this season after moving down from 5A - Division I to 5A - Division II.

The Redskins have missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, competing in one of the tougher districts in the South Texas. The move to a new division brings a new set of opponents and a new shot at the postseason.

"We hope to make it to playoffs," Donna senior defensive back Mario Medrano said. "That's our goal obviously. We haven't made it to playoffs in I think three years. So, playoffs is definitely the goal."

The team returns a large group of experienced players this season. The coaching staff also invested time developing younger players during the offseason.

"We have a lot of returners. We have a lot of kids that saw a lot of time last year. We really invested heavy in some of the underclassmen," Donna head coach Weldon Jones said. "Getting them reps. We've seen the benefits of it today. Last few practices they've really understood the concepts and the ideas we're trying to put in and methods and philosophy of our program and it's showing on the field today."

Senior quarterback Luke Guerrero said the team is ready to take advantage of the fresh start.

"Last year was crazy but I'm excited for this year, it should be better competition and we're ready to run the ball, score some touchdowns and win some games," Guerrero said.

Jones said the new district brings some unknowns, but the focus stays the same.

"You get to a new district and you never know what's gonna happen. Playing teams we haven't played before except for Mercedes," Jones said. "We haven't played the other teams in a while and we got teams that have been in the playoffs recently. You gotta take it game by game and make sure when those games come, we take it one game at a time and make sure that we give it everything we've got and come out with a win."

Donna will start the season against La Feria, Mission, Rio Grande City, and PSJA. District play starts with Brownsville Porter on September 25th. Their bye week is in Week 7 and the district finale comes against Brownsville Lopez on November 5th.
