The Sharyland Rattlers are heading into a new season with a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterback.
This is head coach Craig Krell's sixth year leading the program. The team made the postseason for the second straight season last fall and won a playoff game for the first time since 2022.
The Rattlers are working through an offensive transition this August with a new offensive coordinator. Kevin Ledesma joins the team from the Harlingen Cardinals staff after Sharyland's previous offensive coordinator left to be a head coach at Del Rio.
"We got Coach Ledesma coming over from Harlingen as our OC," Coach Krell said. "We weren't able to get him in until the middle of the summer, so right now it's a process of making sure we're getting everything installed. We're taking out time in terms of that. Making sure we have a good understanding of the foundation of plays. It's been great so far."
The team returns around half their starters on each side of the ball. The biggest question is at quarterback, where they need to replace senior Calvin Harris.
Sharyland sophomore quarterback Will Taylor is working hard to secure that role as the team's starter at the position heading into the season.
Senior wide receiver Francisco Gomez, who is also taking snaps at quarterback, said the roster has the talent to keep things rolling and isn't worried about the transition.
"We're gonna stick with the same mentality," Gomez said. "We're very good. We lost Calvin, he's very good. But we have another QB that can step up, I'm here. The whole team is very good."
Senior defensive lineman Nolan Gahler said the mindset on the other side of the ball hasn't changed either.
"No difference, it's us versus us every week," Gahler said. "We're gonna scheme the same, we're gonna go 100% the entire game. I'm happy, I'm excited to get to it."
