BROWNSVILLE – Damages to the Joe & Tony Oliveira pool in Brownsville has caused its closure until next summer.

Miguel Figueroa is a Brownsville native. He’s spent his entire life in the city and raised a child there. He said during the summer months, he and his son visit Oliveira park several times a week to play soccer.

Last week, he noticed some damage to the pool.

"I thought it was some sort of remodeling of the pool maybe by the city. It was kind of odd because it's July," Figueroa said.

Figueroa explained he grew up swimming in the pool. Being that it’s summer, he and his son would like to take a dip in the pool to cheat the heat.  He wants to know what caused the damage to the pool.

"It could've caused an accident. It’s a liability. Yes it would be interesting to know what's behind this," Figueroa said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS headed to Brownsville city hall for answers. We spoke to the city’s public information officer, Roxanna Rosas.

She explained park and recreation crews were making upgrades to the pool’s filtration system on June 28. Crews returned to the pool around 3 a.m. the next day and found the ground displacement.

"At that time is when the cracks were discovered in and around the pool, so the structural damages were identified,” she said.

Rosas explained after the discovery, the city put up the barriers to ensure the public’s safety.

She said crews are unsure of the exact cause of the damage, but they believe it was caused by the cracks in the pool or damages to pipes underneath the pool.

The city has decided to completely remodel the pool and pool house area. The Joe & Tony Oliveira pool will be closed until next summer, when remodeling is expected to be complete.
