The Brownsville Police Department is investigating a shots fired incident that took place in front of a sitting Brownsville city commissioner's residence.

The shooting occurred early Saturday morning.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify suspects.

The department said when an investigation establishes that a criminal offense has occurred, it will pursue the appropriate criminal charges against those responsible.

Due to the shooting, Commissioner Tino Villarreal Jr. canceled a scheduled town hall meeting where he was going to give the community an opportunity to hear the facts, ask questions, and have an open discussion about the MOU involving SpaceX and Brownsville’s water infrastructure.

"Given last night’s shots-fired incident in front of the home of a sitting City Commissioner, I have made the decision to cancel my upcoming Town Hall until the investigation is concluded and the political climate in Brownsville is healthier for public discussion," Villarreal said. "Once the investigation is concluded and the environment is appropriate for safe, respectful public discussion, I fully intend to reschedule the Town Hall."

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen said he was briefed on the shooting by the police department.

"Last night's shots-fired incident in front of the home of a sitting City Commissioner is deeply troubling, and I want our community to know it is being taken seriously," Cowen said. "Political intimidation and violence — real or attempted — have no place in Brownsville. Our elected officials, city staff, and every resident deserve to feel safe in their own homes, regardless of political disagreements."
