Candidates for Cameron County Precinct 2 commissioner weigh in on pay, taxes
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Early voting is underway for the November midterm elections.
Two candidates are running for Cameron County Precinct 2 commissioner seat and have already made a stand on some local issues, including the county tax break for Saronic Technologies and commissioner pay raises.
Republican candidate Jonathan Campos says he sees the job as a service position. He says he will give back the recent five percent pay increase if elected and send part of his salary to nonprofit organizations.
Campos says he also wants the county to invest in small business owners before major corporations.
“We have to do everything we can to take care of those in need and take care of those who built Brownsville. You know, not just allow the new people coming in, but the people who actually built Brownsville. We got to take care of them first and then bring the other people in,” Campos said.
Democratic candidate Joseph Lucio says his priorities include improving conditions for county employees. As a former county worker, he believes employee evaluations and systems will help staff move up.
Lucio says he did not agree with the pay raise and will vote against future commissioner pay raises. He says he will also hold quarterly town halls where people can ask about county spending and their plans and will hold companies looking to come here accountable.
“I believe we've been giving them too much too fast and so what we need to do is make sure when they come this way we have clawbacks,” Cameron County Precinct 2 candidate Joseph Lucio said. "At the end of the day I don't want to see projections I want to hear guarantees if there's not guaranteed I would like clawbacks."
Early voting ends on Friday, Oct. 30, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
