Donna barbershop reopens months after arson fire destroyed its original location
A Donna barbershop is back open after a fire destroyed its original location.
Minga’s Luxury Gentlemen’s Barbershop opened on Tuesday in its new location at 1501 Hooks Ave.
As previously reported, the Donna Police Department said an arson investigation was underway after the barbershop’s original location burned down in September 2025.
Owner Jovi Ocanas says it's been a journey that wasn't easy, but he’s happy the sound of the razors and blow dryers once again fills his shop.
"It's a big blessing when you can open the door and people want to come back and look great again," Ocanas said.
Ocanas says customers are keeping staff busy. The damage from the fire was about $30,000, and Ocanas said getting back on his feet wasn't easy because he did not have insurance at his old location.
"It was a rough journey for my barbers and myself. This is the way they feed [their] family, and this is how we feed our family and a place where people come together to get their haircuts," Ocanas said.
After the fire, Ocanas and his barbers moved to his dad's barbershop across the street.
"We were very lucky that we had a small space next door to cut hair. That's where I took the barbers," Ocanas said. "They were a little bit cramped and discouraging."
It cost Ocanas $23,000 to open a new location. He says he was only able to do it because of help from the community through fundraising events and sponsors.
"We had a great fundraiser. We sold 1,400 plates," Ocanas said. "Ticket sales and sponsorships are great; the community is supporting us 110%."
Ocanas says his new place is now insured, and he hopes to open more locations across the Rio Grande Valley.
