Edinburg Vela's Caidyn Hoover honored for historic five-interception game
Vela's Caidyn Hoover posted one of the best individual defensive performances in recent RGV high school football history during Week 1.
In the season opener against Edinburg North, the junior defensive back recorded five interceptions. According to MaxPreps data, that's the most by any high school football player in the entire country this fall. The mark is also a new single-game school record at Vela.
"As the game went on, one and two, and then the third one happened," Vela head coach Ernie Alonzo recounted. "Then the fourth one happened and the fifth interception, I mean it's a special night, very special night and we're excited for him."
In recognition of his stellar performance, Hoover was named the 'Built Ford Tough 5A Player of the Week' for the state of Texas.
"I was in shock," Hoover said. "I never expected that would happen for my first varsity game and just out of all the players, all the teams in Texas, I was first picked and it's just a big honor."
Hoover and the Sabercats will stay in Edinburg this week to face the rival Edinburg Bobcats on Friday night.
