BROWNSVILLE – It’s the time of year where sneezing, coughing and watery eyes become more common. Not the flu, but seasonal allergies.

The cold front that came through the Rio Grande Valley early Tuesday morning brought more than just cooler temperatures. It also brought a bunch of pollen with it, causing some people’s allergies to act up.

When dry cold fronts flow through, they can wreak havoc on people with allergies.

“These fronts that begin in the Rocky Mountains and make their way across Texas can loft pollen from places as far north as Dallas and even north of the pan handle,” said Barry Goldsmith with the National Weather Service.

Because the symptoms overlap with cold or flu symptoms, a medical expert advises people need to watch for how long their symptoms stick around.

“If your symptoms go away within a week, three days to a week, think more you got over a cold. If you're struggling with these more than a week you might be dealing with allergies,” explained Dr. Chelsea Chang.

According to Pollen.com, pollen levels will stay high in the Valley for the next five days.
