A fire burned eight vehicles at an illegal dump site in Mercedes, according to Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Homero Garza.

The fire started in the 9100 block of FM 1015 North. Crews had to shut down the roadway at Mile 13 and Mile 13 1/2 to allow water tankers into the area.

Garza said the incident will be reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality because the area was being used as an illegal dump site and junkyard.

No injuries were reported, and the property owner was cited.

The Edcouch, Elsa and Weslaco Fire Departments also responded to the scene.
