The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam where callers are pretending to be law enforcement officers and trying to get money.

The sheriff's office said scammers may claim a person has a warrant, missed jury duty, failed to appear in court or has another legal issue that requires immediate payment.

The callers may use the name of a real law enforcement officer, provide a badge or case number or use spoofed phone numbers to make the call look legitimate.

The sheriff's office said no law enforcement agency will call someone and demand money to avoid arrest, clear a warrant, resolve a criminal matter or prevent legal action.

Residents who receive a suspected scam call should report it to their local law enforcement agency.
