LA FERIA – A street in La Feria is being renamed to honor fallen U.S. Customs and Border Protections agent Javier Vega Jr.

Vega was killed defending his family from two armed men while fishing near Santa Monica.

On Wednesday night, city commissioners unanimously voted to rename Fifth Street, Javier Vega Jr. Street.

City officials said that is the street Vega grew up on and where he still has close family and friends. The city is now working with the local post office to properly notify residents on that street of the upcoming name change.

The two Mexican nationals charged in Vega’s death are awaiting trial.
