WESLACO – An Elsa resident says he’s thankful he didn’t fall for a phone scam.

James Lara tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS he woke up one morning to the call of an $800,000 winning prize but with a catch.

He says he was told he had to mail out $1,500 to get the prize.

Lara says although tempted, he’s glad he thought twice.

Sandra Morin of the Better Business Bureau says prize winners should never have to pay to get their winnings.

Lara says the scammer has called his phone at least four more times but he hasn’t answered.

Morin says if you experience a scam caller, report the number or company to the BBB. Their office phone is 956-968-7889.
