A nonprofit group is pushing back against a license plate reader camera deal approved by commissioners in Rio Grande City.

La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) is opposing the agreement with Flock Safety, a company that makes license plate reader cameras. The cameras have faced pushback across the country, mostly over privacy concerns.

The deal was approved during a Tuesday meeting with Rio Grande City commissioners.

LUPE says the cameras collect more than just license plates and that federal agencies could access that data.

"We don't believe that the sheriff has all of the information at his disposal. Our understanding within each Flock contract is that they actually do allow for the federal government to take any material that the federal government requests," LUPE Director of Civic Engagement Michael Mireles said.

A grant is funding the deal.
