Man sentenced to 10 years of probation for deadly Brownsville shooting
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — A 37-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to shooting and killing a man during an argument, according to Cameron County court records.
Israel Solis pleaded guilty to manslaughter on May 28 in the shooting that killed 33-year-old Omar Garcia. He was sentenced on Oct. 26.
According to previous reports, Solis was driving his vehicle and firing his gun in the air on March 26, 2023, at around 2:30 a.m. near the 6000 block of 5th Avenue in Brownsville when he was confronted by Garcia.
The Brownsville Police Department said Garcia approached Solis to ask him to stop shooting in the area.
“At that point, Mr. Solis got upset, turned the gun on Mr. Garcia, and shot him once in the chest,” police said.
Garcia died as a result of the shooting, police said, adding that Solis then tried to leave but was stopped by relatives of Garcia, who forced Solis out of the vehicle and held him until authorities arrived.
Solis was injured during the incident.
As part of a plea deal, Solis is barred from drinking alcohol, using illegal drugs, and possessing a firearm or ammunition. The order requires him to surrender any firearm or ammunition to the sheriff's office.
Court records also show Solis must pay court costs within 180 days, a $60 monthly probation fee, a $400 pre-sentencing fee, and a $1,000 fine. He also must complete 180 hours of community service and donate $1,000 to a charitable organization.
