Drivers along a McAllen road say they keep finding nails, screws, and other metal debris in the roadway.

One woman says she has had to replace her tires multiple times this year.

Gloria Garza, a 70-year-old Granjeno resident, drives through Shary Road often. She says on every trip she worries about her safety and the state of her tires.

"Bad issues where we have to end up buying tires and all of that," Garza said. "You find a lot of metal objects."

Garza says nails, screws, bolts, and other pieces of metal have ended up stuck in her tires.

"It was about maybe four or five inches long, and it just went straight through my car," Garza said. "I had just gotten the tires. They were like maybe seven, eight days old, not even two weeks."

Garza says she has had to repair her tires three times this year alone. She says at times she will take different routes home to avoid the debris.

Garza believes the metal is coming from Valley Steel Recycling, a business along Shary Road near Military Highway.

"It's worse when they're leaving because all the scrap that stays in the trucks just falls out," Garza said.

Channel 5 News used a magnet to check how much metal was on the ground in a 10-foot area. The magnet picked up nails and screws scattered throughout the area that fully covered the magnet.

Channel 5 News reached out to Valley Steel Recycling. The company said it is aware of the situation and will follow the city's instructions.

Channel 5 News also reached out to McAllen. The city said it received a complaint about the debris earlier this week and that code enforcement will follow up until the issue is resolved.

Neither McAllen nor Valley Steel Recycling provided a timeline or details on what instructions Valley Steel was asked to follow.

"I want them to know that they're supposed to be held responsible," Garza said.
