The mother of a 17-year-old boy who was seen being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Alamo in a viral video was detained, an ICE official confirmed to Channel 5 News.

Teresa Ochoa Briseño was arrested on Monday. A statement from ICE said the woman was a "criminal" who had entered the country without permission after she was previously deported to Mexico in 2025 following an arrest on assault charges.

“Briseño was served with an order of expedited removal and deported to Mexico,” the statement reads. “This administration will uphold immigration law and remove criminal illegal aliens to their home country.”

Briseño spoke with Channel 5 News after her son, Luis Ochoa, was seen in a viral video being detained by ICE officers in Alamo on Sept. 11. Ochoa spoke with the media after the incident and said he and a friend were recording an ICE raid when the agents confronted them.

The video shows an agent striking Ochoa’s friend in the face four times. Ochoa says he was then pepper-sprayed and taken into custody.

"[They] arrested me for no reason. They got on top of me saying, 'Don't resist.' I was never resisting. They broke my wrist," Ochoa said.

A DHS official said the teens were arrested for being “anti-ICE” agitators who were trying to obstruct officers during a vehicle stop, noting that two officers had to be treated at a local clinic for minor injuries from the incident.

ICE has not said if Briseño’s deportation was linked to the video, but immigration attorney Carlos M. Garcia said the link is concerning.

“That’s too big a coincidence to believe that she is detained just a week after her United States citizen child was unlawfully detained and arrested,” Garcia said. “In this country we cherish the First Amendment and believe that we have a right to speak out against injustice, but this is a clear message about what the repercussions are for people who decide to speak out.”

Briseno was removed to Mexico on July 13, 2025 after accepting a voluntary return following her local arrest on July 11, 2025 for assault causing bodily harm to a family member. Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office released Briseno to ICE and, on the same day, she was removed to Mexico. On an unknown date and location, Briseno illegally reentered the U.S.

On Sept. 21, Briseno was served with an order of expedited removal and deported to Mexico. This administration will uphold immigration law and remove criminal illegal aliens to their home country.
