BROWNSVILLE – Construction is underway at a Brownsville apartment complex originally purchased with funds stolen from the Mexican government.

Framing for additional units are going up now at the apartment off Boca Chica Blvd. and 14th Street.

The apartment complex was seized in 2014 from the former Coahuila secretary of finance, Hector Villarreal Hernandez.

According to federal court documents, Hernandez embezzled money from the Mexican state after being appointed to the position in 2008.

The property was bought in October during an auction by the Department of U.S. Treasury.
