Roma residents and city crews taking steps to prepare for potential flooding
Roma, TX (KRGV) — Roma city leaders are watching flood-prone areas closely as rain moves in over the next few days.
Public works crews have already cleared ditches to keep water moving, and the fire department is stocking sandbags, fueling equipment, and putting crews on standby.
Channel 5 News spoke with a Roma resident on Raucon Street near downtown about what the city is doing to prepare.
Roma resident Roel Alanis is getting ready for the rain.

"Keep food together just in case the lights go off or power goes out," Alanis said.
Water can rise quickly in the area, and Alanis said he is keeping a close eye on the forecast.
"We get prepared for things that can fly away with hard winds. We can just pick them up and put them together," Alanis said. "The city provides us with sandbags, and we put them in the entrance of the house so, in case there is an emergency and the water rises, it won't go in."
Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar Jr. said crews are focused on key intersections.
"There's a lot of big flow because it leads to one of our main arroyos and one of our main creeks. We're always in those intersections within streets with Raucon and Bethel Street, making sure that nobody's stuck in traffic, that nobody's stranded," Escobar Jr. said.
Roma Fire Chief Alfredo Garza said the department has the equipment ready for high-water situations.
"We have our boat that we can use to do any swift water rescue. And then we also have our high-profile vehicles, which are our army trucks. We also use them as brush trucks, and they're pretty heavy, so we can go in high-water areas," Garza said.
Garza said plans are in place to close roads if needed.
Alanis said he is also making sure his vehicles are ready.
