South Padre Island breaks ground on new wind and water sports park
South Padre Island, TX (KRGV) — City leaders broke ground Friday morning on a new wind and water sports park expected to cost more than $2.3 million.
Phase one of construction for the Paul Jibber Terheggan Wind and Water Sports Park includes a raised access road, two elevated parking lots, and space for riders to set down their gear.
The raised areas will help riders reach the water during high tides. South Padre Island Council Member Joe Ricco says the city hopes to open the park by April, but weather could affect that timeline.
"We're gonna see what they need, and after we get it open, that'll tell us which route to go and how we can improve the park and add more amenities for them in the sport," Ricco said.
The city bought more than 100 acres for the park, leaving room to expand. Venue tax revenue will fund the project.
