Construction projects across the Rio Grande Valley are facing severe delays and rising costs as local builders point to immigration enforcement as the driver behind a growing labor shortage.

The South Texas Builders Association says labor shortages are delaying projects, driving up costs and affecting local builders across the Valley.

The group says some builders have seen profits drop by as much as 50% as they build fewer homes than they did just two years ago.

Labor shortages have stretched some projects from about four months to nearly a year, increasing costs for both builders and home buyers.

The association estimates prices have gone up by about $10,000 to $20,000 per home because of those delays.

Benny Melendez, vice chair of government relations for the South Texas Builders Association, said the group is advocating for work permits for construction workers.

"We do have a petition... we're just going to advocate for our economy and for the dignity of our community," Melendez said.

The group plans to deliver that petition to congressional leaders at an event called "Rally in the Valley." According to a news release, the event will sound the alarm on how the Trump administration's immigration enforcement approach is disrupting worksites, delaying construction, and driving up costs across the region.
